This paper describes four agribusiness simulators which can be processed on a microcomputer for use in undergraduate and extension teaching. The simulators model the environment in which supermarket chains, farm supply centers, and cooperative and proprietary grain elevators compete for business. Instruction manuals, user's manuals, and a diskette are distributed for each simulator. Each diskette contains programs to enter and edit team decisions, to process decisions and print reports, and to create graphs of team performance. The simulators can be used to teach financial management concepts and techniques, as well as economic principles. |

Industrialization and development increase the demand for information. Specialization of functions and organization also greatly increases the need for coordination and thus the social returns to and demand for information. Agricultural information systems are useful to 1) the government officials dealing with food policy and agriculture, including the central bankers, and enterprises in the public sector; 2) the private sector; and 3) the donors and international organizations. The basic focus of this paper is to review the state of knowledge about the process of improving agricultural market information for both private and public sector uses in developing countries. This involves the question of whether it is wise to invest resources in information... |

The main objective of this paper is to develop a general framework for rural development in which marketing will play a major role. This framework could make the "learning by doing" process more efficient and effective. Specific goals of this paper are to provide the reader with: (1) a better overall understanding of the rural development and marketing development process, (2) an analysis of approaches used by rural development projects in their effort to improve rural marketing, and (3) a systematic approach to rural marketing development. The focus will be on the semi-subsistence and subsistence farmers, who provide a major share of total production and marketed surplus in most developing countries. The importance of the development of the... |

Raising agricultural price policies on costs of production is commonly applied. although with reservations by agricultural economists. Agricultural economists' concerns are centered on the problems with assigning values to the contributions of durable inputs and to the value of those inputs supplied by the farm operator and the operators' household. Some of these expressed reservations of agricultural economists can be reduced if focus is placed on the policy goal to be achieved in developing the production cost estimate. The policy goal affects the selection of the population on which the cost estimates are made and the items of cost to be included in the cost estimate. Policies designed to provide incentives to producers must be targeted toward the costs... |
